Excerpts From The Drakus Cycle - Book 1
![]() The Beginning Of The End #1
![]() ![]() Dark clouds enveloped the surrounding countryside, and cries of terror rang from one end of the island to the other. Daran spun around, and found what the villagers were terrified of. The dragon Salek had returned. Fire burst from his gaping jaw, and razed the countryside. Nobody had ever killed a dragon, let alone Salek.
Daran stood all alone on the edge of the stone of Raik, and yelled out to Salek, “Get down here and fight! Coward!” As Salek dived towards him, a beam of whitey blue fire leapt from Daran's hands and enveloped its target. The dragon flew straight through this fire, and sent a wave of flame towards him. “Come on mortal. Do you really expect to defeat me?” Salek roared through the inferno.
The land around Daran was scorched beyond repair, yet he was untouched. “How did you survive mortal? Time for you to die!” Salek reared up, and balls of fire leapt from his gaping maw, towards him. Daran hastily renewed his shield, and started probing Salek for his weaknesses, and thinks to himself “He doen't get affected by fire, and that would mean that water should harm him. But to get him into the water, I have to knock him out of the sky…”
Daran stood up, and reached for the stars. “What are you doing, mortal?” the dragon asked in disbelief. Liquid fire, burning brighter than the fires of hell leapt from his palms and hit Salek in his left wing, burning straight through. “Noo! This cannot be!” Salek screamed as he plummeted towards the ocean. “Nooooo!”
The first waves of fatigue hit Daran, and he fell to his knees. As he slipped into unconsciousness, he saw the villagers crawling out of their camouflaged hideouts towards him. He was in a coma for three days. The mayor of the village sat by Daran's side, waiting for him to regain conciousness, so that he could stand with him at the town's next meeting. At the end of the three days, Daran slowly woke, and tried to get up. “Don't try and get up, you'll just knock yourself out again.” He looked for a face to put with the voice. “What happened Kaylor?” “You used up too much of your power in that fight, and fell into a coma..” Daran rolls his eyes up towards the ceiling, and just stared.
“Was Salek killed?” Daran asked , wearily. “Unfortunately, no. You did a good job though! He'll never fly again. You punched a hole right through one of his wings!” Daran fell asleep, and his dreams were plagued by Salek. “You will die for this!” Salek hissed, and he woke up with a start. “Kaylor, get here quickly! Salek is going to strike here again! Warn the townsfolk, evacuate the area!” “What about you?” Kaylor inquired. “Are you strong enough to take him on?” “Lets just say, this time, only one of us leaves alive!” Daran got up and looked around. “He comes, and we don't have much time! Kaylor, move!! Warn everyone!”
“Everyone, the dragon is returning! Run for your lives!” Kaylor yelled. Everybody dropped their things, and panic rose throughout the village. “Foolish humans!” Salek thought, as the villagers ran left and right. “Run!” Kaylor screamed at everyone. “Daran! You're mine!” Salek roared through the crowd. Balls of fire screamed through the air and buildings were turned to rubble. “Show yourself! And fight like the puny man that you are!” “I am going to send you to hell once and for all!” Daran barked in reply.
In the blink of an eye, Daran was surrounded by an intense light. The air around him became deathly still, as he walked towards the dragon.
