His sword dangled unceremoniously on his side as he walked through the town. His eyes were as hard as agates, and he wore a constant frown. “Where's the nearest inn?” he asked around him. An old man walked up and answered “It's just around the corner, ye can't miss it!” “Thanks!.” He gave the old man a silver piece,  and walked on. “Hey you! HALT!” the temples guardsmen yelled out to him. “Damn it! I though I lost these guys,” he thought to himself. He ran towards the gates of the town, but the guards were quicker. “You thought you could outsmart us! You foolish little man!” He focused on a single point, and summoned his magic forth. “Wrong! I did outsmart you!” As he finished his sentence, a bolt of lightning leapt from his hands and barrelled through the guards. “I warned you before!” he said, and wandered off through the smoke.
“What do you mean by `he's gone'?! I want him eliminated!” Kaylar screamed out. “He has the gift! He is a danger to us all. He has also sided with the Dark One himself, which automatically signs his death sentence. Get HIM!” Kaylar's personal guards jumped to their feet. “We'll have him before the day is out!” The soldiers then exited the room, leaving Kaylar alone with his student, Daran. “Let me go with them, Master!” Daran exclaimed. “This man has the gift, as do I! You have taught me enough to protect myself. Let me go with them!” Kaylar lifted his head, a worried look growing on his face. “Alright, you can go. Good luck! Come back safely!” “I will Master, I will!” Daran said as he left the room.
The night was eerie and still. All of the soldiers were grumbling about not being able to find the man before nightfall, and were doubting that they would find him. “Cheer up! You'll find him. It will just take a little longer, so keep your spirits up, we'll catch him soon!” All of the soldiers looked up at him, and what he said started to sink in. “He's right! Just because we didn't find him today, it doesn't mean we won't catch him tomorrow!” one of the soldiers yelled out! Daran started to wonder about this man they were chasing, and asked one of the soldiers, “what is his name?” “His name? I think it was Gar…” “Thanks!”
All of a sudden, the air started to crackle around them. “Get down!” Daran screamed out. Bolts of lightning flew from everywhere, and the guards were falling quicker than the lightning could strike. Then Daran saw Gar. He looked bereft of sanity. Every time a soldier died, he just laughed in glee and kept watching. This had to stop! Before he knew what he was doing, a ball of flame appeared in his hand, growing bigger by the second. Gar had to weaken soon, no-one with the gift could last for much longer than this! “I see you” Daran spoke into Gar's mind, “And the moment you weaken, you're mine!” More soldiers screamed as the lightning became more frenzied and struck more and more. Finally, after ten minutes of waiting, Gar weakened. “Take this!” Daran screamed as he hurled his ball of flame directly at him.
The flames leapt up to meet Gar, but he was too quick. Within the blink of an eye, he wove a protective shield around him. When the fireball struck, the magic involved dissipated, striking out in all directions. Daran threw up a shield and renewed his attack. He made a sword out of air, lifted it above Gars head and took it clean off.
All of a sudden, Gar's back split down the middle, and a massive scaly creature took flight. “The fight will never be over! Tell your master than the Lord of the Dark WILL prevail over you pathetic humans! You will all DIE!” As the creature started to fly off, Daran looked up at the clouds, and lightning started to form within them. “No, you're wrong, darkspawn! If we were so pathetic, would this happen?” Daran said as the first bolts of lightning hit the creature. “Nooo! Burn you, pathetic human! We will prevail!” the creature screamed as it fell from the sky, and turned to dust.
The surviving soldiers then started cheering, and Daran took a look around, noticing all the dead and dying, and swore to the Creator that he would fight the Dark One with every breath, even if it cost him his life. As he got up, he set about the task of healing the wounded, and then rose up, walking on air, to talk to them all. “All of you used to be Kaylar's personal guard. Look before you! I need soldiers for my own army, one with one goal…to rid the earth of darkspawn, and to spit in the Dark One's eye…Who will come with me?!!” The soldiers all roared in acceptance, as Daran floated back down to the ground, and said, “Now all of you rest up! We'll be heading back to town in the morning, and then we'll be starting our journey…it will be long, it will be hard, but we WILL prevail” As the soldiers cheered some more, Daran walked into the forest, to meditate, and prepare, for the times to come.
